DENNIS CHALKIN
For 50 years, Dennis Chalkin has transformed chaos and monotony into gripping, decisively-composed images. Chalkin studied drawing, painting, and photography at The Cooper Union under the tutelage of preeminent artists including Diane Arbus and Jay Maisel. Upon graduating in 1969, he worked as a freelance news photographer for the New York Times. His work has appeared in the newspaper and on the cover and pages of The New York Times Magazine. CHARLIE CHALKIN

Curious. Obsessive. Untraditional. Singular. Charlie Chalkin spent his early years witnessing his father’s craftsmanship through the camera forever around his neck. Apprenticing in photography under Dennis’s tutelage, Chalkin decided to take up the mantle by creating a path all his own. And soon, Chalkin Creative was born. Chalkin focused on visual storytelling through photography, film, visual media, and advertising, partnering with brands such as Google, Hennessy, Patron, GrubHub, Nickelodeon, and many more. He has collaborated with the likes of A-List talent, including Ryan Reynolds, Tina Fey, CC Sabathia, Billie Jean King, among others. Chalkin creates visual landscapes through palpable imagery, transforming brands and enlivening personalities to pop off the screen. Chalkin employs the camera lens to communicate his perspective on the world– capturing the poignant in the seemingly benign, while expressing the emotion in humanity that connects us all. He bends light and shadow, juxtaposes color and contrast, urban and rural, to create his own visual language, turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. Chalkin’s incessant curiosity with his surroundings and the humans that occupy them result in ineffable imagery that challenges the status quo and forces the observer to ask more questions about the world, and themselves. When Chalkin isn’t focused on wielding his Leica or shooting on film, he is using wire as his choice medium of artistic escape. Long inspired by the works of Calder, Chalkin’s wire sculptures capture a playful, lighthearted, often comedic interpretation of society. Chalkin creates a physical manifestation of his wry sense of humor, a profound and satisfying simplicity through manipulated metal. Wire affords Chalkin a freedom of movement, a continuous line woven, bent, and shaped by his hand, resulting in a malleable piece of art that inhabits a life of its own. Chalkin is drawn to the vitality and immediacy in wire sculpture, juxtaposed with the static, frozen in time nature of photography. Chalkin is equally adept in both paradigms, and is invigorated to share both with you.
